The University of Calabar (UNICAL) in preparation for its 37th Convocation and 50th anniversary celebration held a significant interdenominational service, as guest preacher urged graduates to become instruments of hope to the society.
The event, held at the Conference Hall of University on Tuesday, centered around the poignant theme: “Spec Nostra Non Confundit,” which translates to, “Your Hope Does Not Disappoint.”
During the ceremony, guest preacher Rev. Fr. Evaristus Bassey addressed the audience with a powerful message. “Graduands Must Not Disappoint Their Employees Society, And Government,”
The Clergy also, enumerated the essential duty of those in authority to include focusing on the welfare of the people, and not to disappoint, saying “those in authority must focus on the welfare of the people and not to disappoint”.
Rev. Bassey urged lawmakers to enhance governance, stating, “they must not disappoint the populace.”
He stressed the essence of educational standards, noting that, “our educational system must not decline. We must improve it to compete on a global scale.”
He noted that the hope given to humanity by God remains steadfast, as recorded in Romans 5:5, which states, “Such hope never disappoints or deludes us, for God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.”
The cleric further advised graduating students to embrace their future roles with responsibility. “As you enter the labor market, consider yourselves as instruments of hope for society and the nation,” he said urging them to “lead by example, and do not disappoint your future employers.”
He encouraged the graduates to view their education as an opportunity to serve humanity, saying, “be a shining light as you transition into the next chapter of your life.”
The anniversary was a moment of reflection and celebration for the institution, which the Rev. Bassey lovingly referred to as a “citadel of learning”, expressing his wishes for continued progress and success of the University in the years to come.
Prayers were offered to rekindle hope, growth for the nation, unprecedented growth for the University, and unimaginable opportunities for graduates.
Moderated by Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Orok Duke, the event witnessed the crucial intersection of hope, education, and responsibility, leaving an inspiring message for both graduates and stakeholders in the education sector.
The event was followed by the opening of the Research Fair and Exhibition.
