Hope Waddell Training Institution, (HOWAD) one of the oldest schools established in Calabar, Cross River state in 1895 is gearing up for a week-long celebration to mark its 130th anniversary.
The grand event, themed “Hope Waddell at 130: A Glorious Heritage Inspiring the Future,” will take place from March 3 to March 8, 2025.
Speaking at a World Press Conference held at the Hope Waddell Hall on Monday, the Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, Sir Toni Ikpeme, described the event as a historic.
“Hope Waddell is more than a school; the school is older than Nigeria, it is a symbol of excellence, a citadel of learning. This celebration will showcase our rich heritage and inspire future generations,” he stated.
“Hope Waddell Training Institution holds a distinguished place in Nigeria’s educational history.
“While the first four schools in the country were established in Lagos, Hope Waddell was the first school built east of the Niger,” Ikpeme noted.
The week-long festivities, PillarToday gathered, would feature a variety of activities.
Shedding light on the events lined up for the weeklong celebration, Ikpeme said the first day would witness novelty football match and a visit to homes for the less privileged.
“Tuesday will host the school’s inter-house sports competition. Wednesday will see a female football tournament sponsored by Her Excellency, Bishop Eyoanwan Bassey Otu, wife of the state Governor, and a distinguished alumna.
“Thursday’s highlight will be a grand carnival led by the Presbyterian Church, with performances by the Naval Band and the Brass Band.
“Friday’s schedule includes the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and the election of the institution’s National Executive Council, followed by unveiling of a colloquium,” he stated.
A major highlight of the anniversary, Ikpeme noted, would be the launch of a One Billion Naira Endowment Fund, and a Dinner Night on Saturday.
“On Sunday, there would be a Thanksgiving anniversary to be held at the School Parish,” he submitted.
In his remarks, the National President of the Alumni Association, Chief Efio-Ita Ephraim, said the N1Billion Naira endowment fund is the initiative of the Alumni.
“The funds raised will be used to equip the institution with modern teaching and laboratory facilities to maintain its legacy of academic excellence,” he stated.
Also speaking, Most Rev. Daniel Etim, representative of the Prelate of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, Most Rev. Dr. Ekpenyong Akpanika, reaffirmed the church’s support.
“Hope Waddell remains a citadel of learning. We stand firmly behind its vision and mission,” he declared.
