Wednesday morning was another exciting moment for students and teachers at the Community Secondary Commercial School (Comsecom), Ibiaku Itam, Uyo, Akwa Ibom state as they welcomed another set of their heroic sports ambassadors, Deborah Bassey and Inyene Umoh.
The duo of Inyene and Deborah landed Victor Attah Airport, Uyo, from Lagos after representing Nigeria in the just concluded ICC U19 Women’s T20 Cricket World Cup in Malaysia.
Deborah was the famous wicket keeper that dismissed New Zealand’s Captain, Tash Wakelin while Inyene featured on Nigeria versus Samoa and England.
Both games were abandoned and points shared due to heavy rain in Sarawak, Malaysia.
The two members of Nigeria U19 Women’s T20 World Cup squad, the Junior Female Yellow Greens, were received by the Principal of Comsecom, Mrs. Mary Okon. The Games Master, Mr. Ifiok Inim also presented the Assistant Coach, Blessing Etim, to the school principal.
Mrs. Okon was overwhelmed with joy for the girls’ safe return and the pride that both girls have bestowed on the school through cricket game. Mr. Inyene Umoh, father to Inyene, was on the ground to witness the excitement among the students and staff.
Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) President, Mr. Uyi Akpata in 2023 led ICC General Manager, Development, Mr. William Glenwright to commission a ‘Practice Net’ facility at the school premises. Currently, construction at a cricket oval project in the school is nearing completion.
